Tiny House - 20FT Shipping Container Conversion
We were tasked to design a sustainable temporary home for our client on the site of their future new build property in Portugal.
Re-purposing a side opening 20ft shipping container as the basis of a conversion, the design had to prioritise storage, the connection with the surrounding environment and a prospective future life as an AirBNB rental.
Interior storage is within both high level (overhead) and low level (beneath seating) units, whilst a pulley system enables the bed platform to be hoisted and tucked into a ceiling recess above the sofas during the day. A wall hung, fold down work desk / dining bench offers views over the landscape, sited in front of the glazed doors, enabling alfresco working or dining and which in turn can be folded, locked up against the wall when not use. The wood stove can rotate 360 degrees, so in the cooler months, with the stone plinths removed and the doors fully open, this doubles as an outside stove for gatherings beneath the night sky.
The large cantilevered roofline is intended to minimise heat gain during the hottest part of the day. External insulation, cladding and shading systems are a key considerations relative to the climate and orientation, with a brise soleil and shuttering proposed for south facing elevations.
The roof as a semi private sun deck is populated with native grasses and specimen plants to afford an element of screening from below. Proposed concealed parapet gutters will transfer excess rainfall to vertical chain pipes to ventilated subterranean water storage containers, intended to provide controlled irrigation for the roof and on site planting.
